Oil Painting Fundamentals for Beginners with Emma Hirst

This 8-session course will cover all of the fundamentals of oil painting that you will need to get started in this incredibly versatile medium. If you have ever wanted to take a workshop from an artist, or just start an oil painting yourself, but are intimidated by the medium, this will be a great course for you. Despite the mastery that can be achieved with oil paint, the fundamentals are more accessible than you may think. In this course I will cover the materials in detail, including how to care for them, how to use them, and how to dispose of them safely. I will go over what is optional, what is necessary, and why. I will go over common mistakes beginners make and how to trouble shoot these aspects. And at the end of this course you will have all the tools needed to start and finish a painting, as well as the confidence to take courses and workshops from other artists you admire who work in oil paint!

Where Light Meets Dark: Understanding Contrast and Transitions for Realistic Drawing with Emma Hirst

Where Light Meets Dark: Understanding Contrast and Transitions for Realistic Drawing with Emma Hirst

This workshop will explore the roll of edges and transitions in drawing. We will address the following aspects of edges; the range of values, the rate of change in those values, and how the rate of change conveys depth/form. We will also address material dynamics, and developing skills that will allow you to create smooth and clean transitions from one value to the next. This will be an effective workshop because although there is a vast amount of conceptual information on realism, as well as an incredible time commitment to practice that ultimately allows someone to create realistic work, understanding how to keep edges soft, and transitions clean is something that can change a drawing from looking like a cartoon to looking very real. All levels welcome.
