This three-day workshop will help you make competent drawings of portraits.  Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, this class will further your skills.  Step by step demonstrations by artist/instructor Oliver Sin will help you look closely and understand structure of the face.  You will draw from live model on both days and learn the techniques of mastering expressive portraiture with vine charcoal, charcoal pencils on drawing papers, and tonal papers. This class is for beginners who wish to learn figure drawing. Throughout the 8-week course, we will start with dynamic gestures, move on to precise proportions, learn how to execute lines, and cover shading and rendering, all while focusing on the fundamentals of figure drawing. This class is not for absolute beginners, some experiences required. Different techniques mentioned in Henry's book, Henry Yan's Figure Drawing, Techniques and Tips, will also be introduced and practiced in class.

Other than techniques, students will also be encouraged to find their own way of seeking beauty from each pose when practice, and interpret what they found with a personal artistic approach.

**This is a three and a half (3.5) day in-person workshop**

Composition involves the entire relationship of parts to whole, from the individual brushstroke to the largest shape. It is only through solid creative composition that a painting becomes powerful and unique. In this workshop you will explore the organization of value, structure of the rectangle, manipulation of pictorial space and the role of color and mark-making. Maggie will work with you to gain new insight and skill in composition. Working from the still life, you will emphasize light as the organizer of color and shape. Aesthetic principles and painting techniques will be presented while individual attention and group critiques will help you evaluate your work. Maggie's gestural style is classically derived, yet contemporary.

Ho-Jun's artistic anatomy course offers a distinctive and comprehensive introduction to the skeletal and muscular systems of the human body. In this 8-week course, we will explore the dynamics of anatomical form and structures, discovering how they can be applied to the creation of figurative art. By studying with Ho-Jun, you will establish a solid foundation of the human form, which will ignite your passion for artistic anatomy as you move forward on your creative journey.

**In Person Weekly Sunday Classes**

This class will help you make competent painting of the human heads.  Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, this class will help you develop your skills.  Topics include achieving a likeness, modeling light and shade, mixing flesh tones and applying paint through various techniques. Step by step demonstrations by artist/instructor Mildred Hankinson and examples will help you look closely and understand the parts of the human face.  You will get anatomical information and an understanding of the mechanical movement.  They will help you re-assess your painting and produce much more sophisticated painting from a live model. We will also learn to paint hands towards the end of the course.

Start with what you do know and gain skills by doing exercises that isolate different aspects of painting and will inform your decisions from here on. Fun and informative, with loads of practical take-home principles.

This class is good for both oil and acrylic painters.

Learn to take your paintings to the next level in terms of composition, mark making, color harmony, and texture. Rich painterly brushwork, dynamic color temperature relationships and experienced decision making will allow your work to stand out among the crowd.

Let’s take a deep dive in choosing how to manipulate and interpret your photo reference when preparing to do a painting. Larger sweeping brush work makes a bigger impact when covering your surfaces, set aside your smaller brushes for this workshop. We will be working with 2 inch house brushes and other large brushes sizes to medium size brushes.

Learn how to paint the human form in this 2-day workshop focusing on the fundamentals of figure painting. Students will learn how to effectively paint alla prima, or wet-on-wet, from initial block-in to final rendering. Color mixing, brush handling, and paint application will be covered. Instruction includes demos, lectures, and individual critiques.

**4 Sundays**

In this workshop, Sung Kim will teach the basic foundational skills of portrait painting by using traditional methods to create realistic portrait painting from a live model. The course will cover the principal stages of building portrait structure and proportion along with knowledge of how to make color temperature and light values of skin tones. Technical instructions will be presented with demonstration, brief lecture and critique.

This workshop course will be about the studio processes to creative critical thinking. The goal of the class is trying to open a path for students to embrace their unique points of view while still applying a technical standard in craftsmanship and execution. This will be geared towards artists who have a desire to refine their creative voice and broaden their visual understanding of subject matter, color, and texture. Over the two days Daniel Segrove will be going over ways to understand the approaches to creating a series or body of work that can then be applied on a professional level. These exercises will allow students to apply it towards any style they may be interested in; so they can have the creative freedom to personalize their own visual vocabulary.

This course will explore different ways that figure can interact with the environment. Working from observation in oils, we will do a series of small 3 hour color studies that each introduce a new compositional idea. We will work on finding accurate value and color relationships as we consider different cropping, lighting possibilities, placing the figure in both highly chromatic and neutral arrangements, or subduing the figure to fit into an overarching motif. The course will be taught through lecture, demonstration and individual critique.

3-Day Workshop

Over the course of 3 days, students will work from the life-model for 6 hrs per day. This intensive workshop will feature a single pose throughout. Students will be guided through the figure drawing process in a series of steps, ultimately leading to a finished drawing. Dynamic composition and a coherent value structure are key to a successful figure drawing. The instructor will draw along with the students as well as give each student one on one critique throughout the process.

The sketchbook can be understood as a space that can be utilized to promote the exploration and development of diverse possibilities that present themselves to us while reflecting upon the act of representation. In this workshop, we will work on the design and elaboration of both drawings and paintings, working from sketches to final paintings. We will work on the relationship between the figure and the space it occupies, together with portraits, emphasizing the ability to magnify the interconnection between shapes and color.

George Cwirko-Godycki is an illustrator and notable art instructor.  In this class, he will show you how to handle drapery and you will learn how to use the folds of the fabric to benefit the gesture of the pose.  Students will focus on the elements of quick sketch: gesture, rhythm, line of action, volume, stretch and pinch.  You will also learn to unify the action of the pose by creating shapes that give a dynamic read. You will benefit from George’s generous teaching style as he provides informative lectures and beautiful demonstrations. In-person participants will be working alongside George from live costumed models.

The goal is for people to come out of this workshop understanding a new pencil cross-hatching technique and how to go about it + learning a new observation technique Viktor picked up from a professor of Criminology who used to teach  facial recognition techniques at the Bulgarian Police Academy at the time.

Storyboarding is a powerful tool to visually convey an idea for telling a story.  It is an essential process for filmmakers, graphic novel artist, illustrators, animators, game design artist, graphic designer, business planners and more.  During this two-Saturday workshop, Yung-Han will discuss his role as a Story Artist at Pixar Animation Studios, what his day entails, what skill sets are needed for storyboarding and how he approach a story.  We will be analyzing films, break down scenes in detail and drawing from the film. This workshop is for anymore who is interested in learning how to storyboard, improving your storytelling, and have a stronger understanding of filmmaking.  All levels are welcome!

With demonstration and gentle critique, Felicia will challenge you to correctly observe and record the fundamentals: shapes, values, edges and color. 

In this workshop Felicia will combine portraiture, the subject that she was first interested in, and with which she gained her skill, with her current interests in still life, interiors and abstraction.

Felicia is an inspired and creative teacher with 9 years of teaching experience under her belt. She will interact with each student according to their experience and strengths. All levels welcome!

Do you want to take your gesture drawing to the next level? Adding story elements to your work will create stronger ideas that is both entertaining and appealing. Learn to add storytelling in your gesture drawing with Pixar animator Terry Song. With his experience, you  will learn about line of action, pushing shapes, exaggeration, acting and the role of gesture in storytelling. You will learn techniques that will help your drawings communicate ideas much more effectively.  This workshop includes model fee and a 2 hour field sketching on Sunday morning, location TBD.
